BRADLEY, Monterey County — October 29, 2026. A major transportation project is being designed for U.S. Highway 101 near Bradley. Caltrans’ Bradley Capital Preventive Maintenance (CAPM) project covers roughly 7.8 miles between postmiles R1.9 and R9.7 and proposes a combination of bridge replacements, pavement rehabilitation and safety improvements. The agency’s current project page lists an estimated $80,999,000 construction cost.
Which bridges are included?
Caltrans plans to replace the northbound and southbound San Antonio River bridges near postmile R6.66 and the southbound North Bradley Undercrossing near postmile R7.94. For the San Antonio River bridges, its preferred alternative uses precast construction; the agency estimates up to three construction seasons for that option compared with up to four for a cast-in-place alternative.
Why does the highway need work?
Inspection reports identify deterioration in concrete bridge elements and erosion vulnerability around foundations. The project also calls for rehabilitation of worn pavement, replacement of several culverts, improved guardrails and roadway signs, and updated traffic-counting equipment. These are planned improvements, not proof that the roadway is presently unsafe for normal use.
When is construction expected?
Caltrans’ schedule identifies spring 2029 for advertising and summer 2029 through winter 2032 as the proposed construction period. Actual timing is subject to design, funding, contracts and future agency updates. The project’s environmental decision was documented in September 2025; that is not the same as a construction-start notice.
What should drivers expect?
Plans anticipate traffic controls and temporary median crossovers while bridge structures are replaced. They do not establish a current 2026 closure or a specific future detour start. Travelers should check Caltrans QuickMap before a trip, especially during later construction phases.
